Kalpitiya offers a range of spots that will suit every kiter's needs. The lagoon is a great spot for all levels from complete beginners to advanced riders. The water is shallow and flat and there is more than enough space to accommodate everyone. The water in the lagoon is warm so there is no need for a wetsuit though a rash vest for the sun is recommended. There is the odd shell in the sand, so booties (water shoes) are recommended for those still walking upwind or falling off their board regularly. Kite sizes in the lagoon can range from 4m (for beginners) to 15m on light wind days. In general the average size will be a 9m. If your quiver consists of a 7, 9 and 12 then you will spend most of your days on the water in Kalpitiya! As this lagoon is flat water with moderate chop it is ideal for improving your skills on a twin tip, but also great for anyone practising riding a directional board. There is a short wave break outside of the lagoon in the Indian Ocean for anyone interested in learning to surf waves or progress their skills.

The local people are very friendly and are always willing to show travellers around and help them out in any way.

The Experience

Kalpitiya is a small, remote fishing and farming village on the Sri Lankan coast. There are numerous kitesurfing schools and resorts dotted around Kalpitiya, each taking turns throwing nightly parties. The resorts are not clustered close together, so this is also a great place to relax and unwind.
